Laikipia means a treeless plain, a vast plain in Maasai language. Laikipia County is located in the Great rift valley and it is a month the smallest counties we have in Kenya. It consumes an area of 9,462 square kilometers.
The county borders six counties: Meru and Nyeri to the south, Nyandarua to the southwest, Samburu to the north, Isiolo to the northeast and Baringo to the west.
The county constitutes three constituencies,
The county's top leaders are Irungu Wakahora (Governor), Godfrey Kariuki (Senator) and Jane Machira (Women Representative).
Other top leaders in Laikipia County include Stephen Karani (MP-Laikipia West), Antony Kimaru (MP-Laikipia East) and Mathew Lerpukel (MP-Laikipia North).
There are four major urban centres in the county namely, Nanyuki, Nyahururu, Rumuruti and Kinamba, with Nanyuki and Nyahururu being more developed. This can be attributed to the long-time role as the administrative headquarters of the former Laikipia and Nyandarua districts. These towns are also major transport hubs of the county connecting the county to other counties nationally. For this reason, they have a high population density.
